Course Description

This camp is great for anyone new to backcountry touring. It’s a comprehensive 3-day course where you will learn all the basic skills necessary to venture out in the backcountry.

Small groups and hands-on instruction will give you plenty of opportunity to have all your questions addressed and to feel more comfortable and confident to start ski touring. A lot of information will be covered, however we will apply course content when suited in the best possible classroom…out on the slopes! You will also have the opportunity to be leading the group and putting in the uptrack, with direct coaching from your instructor.

Is this for you?

Have you just completed your AST 1 and feel that you have so much more to learn before venturing into the backcountry on your own? Its been a while since you ski toured and you want to fresh up on your backcountry skills?

If you are keen to take your resort skiing into the backcountry and apply all the skills you learned in your AST 1, this course is for you! You will need to be an experienced downhill skier or snowboarder to join this camp, with the ability to ride black diamond runs and feel comfortable in variable snow conditions. You also need fitness to be able to walk uphill for a minimum of 1000-1500m / day. Basic backcountry riding experience is needed (min 5 days). It’s recommenced to take your AST 1 course prior to this course, but it’s not a requirement. Most importantly is an interest in learning new mountain skills and have a passion for skiing and riding!


What You Will Learn

This camp is designed to give skiers and riders the chance to Build Confidence and Experience in the backcountry. We create a comfortable and fun learning atmosphere to help everyone make better informed decisions in avalanche terrain. And it’s also a fantastic opportunity to explore the mountains around Revelstoke.

You will learn everything from effective techniques for avalanche rescue (companion rescue), understanding types of avalanches and snow stability, how to plan for safe travel in avalanche terrain, track setting and skinning, gear for backcountry touring, and much much more. You will get the opportunity to lead the group with direct coaching from your instructor.

Itinerary

Pre-course zoom meeting evening before first field day

Day 1: Focused on reviewing avalanche rescue skills and basic backcountry travel skills. We will meet at trailhead at 7am in Revelstoke backcountry or Rogers Pass and be back to trailhead by 4pm the latest. Debrief the day and plan for tomorrow.

Day 2: Meet at Rogers Pass trailhead for decided ski objective at 7am. We will spend the day learning “on the fly”. Focused on travel skills in avalanche terrain, route finding and track setting and how to manage terrain safely with current avalanche conditions. Back by trailhead by 4pm the latest. Debrief the day and plan for tomorrow.

Day 3: Very similar to day 2, but more focused on YOU leading and making decisions with coaching from your guide.

  • Personal ski gear (ski touring boots, skis or split-board, skins)

  • Personal avalanche safety equipment (probe, shovel and transceiver)

  • Transportation to and from ski location

  • National Park pass for vehicle

  • Insurance (trip cancellation, travel, medical)


Equipment

Travel Equipment

-  ski touring skis / telemark / split board 

-  ski boots / snowboard boots

-  ski poles (with powder basket)

-  ski skins for traveling up the hill (make sure the glue works well)

-  avalanche transceiver with new batteries and spares (need to be a modern 3 antenna transceiver)

-  shovel (no plastic)

-  probe (2-3m)

Clothing

  • waterproof jacket and pants (Gore-Tex or equivalent)

  • soft shell type of jacket for everyday skiing

  • warm insulation jacket (down or synthetic)

  • base layer (wool or synthetic -no cotton, please)

  • light pair of gloves fo skinning and warm pair of ski gloves or mitts

  • warm hat

  • sun hat (full brim or cap)

  • buff, neck tube or balaclava

Miscellaneous

  • backpack (30-40L)

  • googles & sunglasses

  • helmet (optional)

  • small first aid kit with personal medications, blister kit etc. 

  • water bottle(s) 1-2 litres

  • thermos (optional)

  • lunch

  • face mask (COVID)

  • hand sanitizer (COVID)
